Stereotactic Brain Surgery

The concept of stereotactic brain surgery is simple. This technique uses images of the brain to guide the surgeon to a target within the brain. Stereotactic biopsy is a precise method of sampling a small region of brain tissue using image-guidance and minimally invasive techniques. Through only a skin puncture and tiny bony opening, an instrument is accurately passed into a brain lesion in order to determine its nature. This approach is often used to diagnose brain tumors or other disorders. CT or MRI guidance is used. Intraoperative CT Scan for Stereotactic Surgery is also used to detect tumors.

Cerebro Vascular Surgery (Aneurysms/AVMs)

Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) involve an abnormal connection between one of the brain's arteries and veins. AVMs allow blood from the heart to bypass the brain's capillaries, which normally deliver oxygen and nutrients to the brain tissues. This may result in neurological deficits.

The detoured blood causes increased pressure on the fragile wall of AVM. The AVM may become swollen due to the effects of this pressure. The ballooned AVM can press down on the adjacent brain tissue, inducing seizures or causing compressive damage to surrounding brain tissue. 3-dimensional x-ray (CT scan) or magnetic image (MRI) of the brain are used to diagnose AVMs. Cerebro vascular surgery is performed to remove or cut off the blood supply to the AVM. This will prevent further growth of the AVM and eliminate the risk of rupture.

A cerebral aneurysm is an abnormally dilated segment of a blood vessel surrounding the brain. In some cases, the entire blood vessel widens and expands resembling a balloon-like structure. Depending on the location, size and extent of bleeding cerebro vascular surgery is performed on the patient, and an ultrasound device is used to monitor the degree of vasospasm. Complications such as re-bleeding, severe vasospasm, and brain swelling are the major causes of morbidity and mortality after aneurysm rupture.

Movement Disorder Surgery

The Movement Disorder Surgery department at JD Healthcare's hospital offers patients a number of different surgical treatment options for movement disorders. Movement disorders suitable for treatment include Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, primary or secondary dystonia, tremor from multiple sclerosis or brain injury, and other movement disorders.

Neuro-Endoscopic Surgery

In the endoscopic surgery, an endoscope called the GAB endoscope is inserted into the cavities of the brain through a small opening or through a burrow and any kind of tumor or any other abnormalities in the cavities is removed or corrected. The GAB endoscope is a rigid endoscope and can easily go straight into the cavity of the ventricle.

Neuro-Muscular Disorders

JD Healthcare's Hospital provides care for an entire spectrum of peripheral nerve and muscle diseases, including Neuropathies, Myopathies, Myasthenia gravis and related disorders, and Muscular Dystrophy.

Neuro-ICU

The Neuro-Intensive care unit (ICU) at JD Healthcare's Hospital brings together specially trained personnel, sophisticated monitoring techniques, and specialized treatment modalities in a 24-hour monitored setting, all with the single goal of improving outcomes of patients with neurological diseases.

Movement Disorder Clinic

The Movement disorder clinic at JD Healthcare's Hospital specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease, tremor, chorea, dystonia and other movement disorders. The doctors at the clinic are specialized to evaluate and manage patients with disorders of movement such as tremor, dystonia, Parkinson's disease and unusual movement disorders.

Speciality Epilepsy Clinic

Specialty clinic offers state-of-the-art medical and surgical management of epilepsy. A full complement of advanced diagnostic tests is available for diagnosis, seizure classification, and evaluation for surgical treatment of epilepsy. EEG monitoring of patients is done to determine the location of seizures. Results of the monitoring tests are supplemented by other diagnostic procedures.

Since seizures can be associated with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), the Epilepsy clinic collaborates with the Stroke Clinic to assist with surgical treatment of AVMs. This includes defining the seizure locus adjacent to the AVM and performing brain mapping to define critical areas of brain function prior to surgery.
